I confess, I am not super speedy. That means that the 5K is not my favorite race distance. I’m just hitting my stride by the time a 3.1-mile race is over! Plus, for a 5K, the race-fee to race-distance ratio is too high! I want some more mileage for my money. Even 8K is not long enough for me. I am an endurance runner. That being said, I found the half marathon to be quite challenging and not exactly what I would call “fun.” Satisfying? Yes. Rewarding? Yes. Challenging? YES! My favorite? No.

10K is a good distance for me, it poses some endurance challenge but not so much that I can’t easily train for one. Plus I seem to be get a new PR every time I do one, which helps me feel pretty good about my efforts!

I’m with you — 10K is my favorite! I’ve only run it twice, once as part of an Olympic triathlon and once as a free-standing race, but I loved it both times.

It’s the half marathon for my money and enjoyment. Not only can I go fast at the distance, but it doesn’t kill my heart (like any race between a 5k and 10k will) or my legs (like marathons do).

The only 10k I ran was in August in Ohio in the evening through the city streets. Seriously, what were the organizers thinking? Conditions were hot and miserable and it was no kind of fun — but I finished! What I really look forward to getting back to though are sprint duathlons. Next summer!

That does sound miserable! My 10K was in the spring with an early morning start — perfect running weather. A sprint duathlon sounds fun. I’ve never done one.

I am training for Olympic distance triathlons so the 10k is my go to usually but I throw in 5ks every once in awhile for speed work.

Alyssa, that makes sense to me! It’s been a while since my last 5K — nearly a year — and I can hardly wait to get out there and test my speed at that distance. I’m going to hold off on that until after the marathon in November though.
